Why Summer Bridge?
Summer Bridge is a six-week intensive academic residential program that begins July 3 and ends on August 15, 2008. Summer Bridge is designed to prepare first year fall admits for the academic rigors of Cal. Participants are enrolled in two academic courses, workshops, and an advising seminar, which meet for over 22 combined hours per week. In addition, students spend a minimum of three hours of study per week for each hour of course lecture.
Enrollment in Summer Bridge is limited to 130 students. Some students are invited to participate and for others, Summer Bridge is a condition of their admission to Cal. Admission to the program is selective. If you have questions regarding your eligibility, please contact the Summer Bridge office in April.
All students are required to live in a designated residence hall where they will build community and support networks to assist them with their academic transitional experience. Students from various geographical regions, cultural backgrounds, and diverse perspectives participate in Summer Bridge.
Summer Bridge is challenging, rewarding, and fun! Students who attend the program are better prepared to meet the academic and social demands of their first year at Cal. Summer Bridge helps students:
- Get ahead in coursework
- Develop Math and English skills
- Get personal academic advising
- Navigate the UC system
- Become familiar with campus layout, libraries, and computer labs
- Build a support network with student, faculty, advisers, and staff
- Transition smoothly to life in the residence halls
- And so much more!
Summer Bridge students also receive ongoing academic and advising support throughout their freshman year. This includes priority admission to tutoring, study groups, and adjunct classes taught by the Student Learning Center staff, as well as invitations to academic workshops. In addition, students are assigned an adviser who assists them during Summer Bridge and is available to them throughout their tenure at Cal.
